Also, early January on BBC One Scotland (TV) switch on to the fascinating documentary, Pre-Teen Proms. Meanwhile, here's a wee quote from the Big Yin'...

Scotland...

Earlier today I was over at BBC Radio Scotland to voice a promo for a
St Andrews Day
feature on The Culture Cafe, in which Billy Kay makes a special case for the Scots language. It got me thinking about this famous voice of Scots culture...

"O wad some power the giftie gie us To see oursel's as ithers see us! It wad frae monie a blunder free us. And foolish notion; What airs in dress and gait wad lea'e us, And ev'n devotion!"

"Dare to be honest and fear no labor"

Character...

"Wrinkles show how we've worked hard,
raised kids, enjoyed good meals, tossed back a
drink or two, laughed, cried and struggled.
They are just symptoms of what gives our lives value.
If you really didn't ever want to get wrinkles,
you should have stopped smiling years ago."
- Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop

Recycling...

I had lots of fun taking part in a recycling voice project for Natural Scotland this week! Of course, we can all do a little (or heaps) to reduce landfill and waste. This old proverb sums it up neatly...

"Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without".
- New England proverb

Family...

The off-beat uncle, glamorous gran, philosophical father, outrageous sibling, an infamous grandfather, scandalous cousin, mighty matriarch, inspirational mother, fun lovin' aunty, golf-lovin' grandpa, free-spirited granny, big-hearted brother, super-square sister, awesome offspring... Family! Many families have at least one "real character"...probably with a story well worth telling!? Perhaps, tales of one of your ancestors is still retold at family gatherings today? Well, it could be your time to put pen to paper...

Today, I voiced a promotion for a collaboration between BBC Radio Scotland and Scottish Book Trust, inviting you to write a short story about an incredible character in your family. The story can be based around a particular person or event, and it can be funny, sad, old or new. It could be broadcast or published in a book. Would you love a special family character to be given a place in written or broadcasting history? Find out more at www.bbc.co.uk/radioscotland/familylegends.

Influence...

"Did you ever watch a flock of sandpipers on the beach, how they ebb and flow with the tides.... at once they all will be flying in a certain direction, and then in an instant the entire flock will turn simultaneously and take a new direction...I suspect that it is but one bird that creates the thought that turns the flock, and the one thought becomes immediately manifested in all the others. The same Spirit that moves within the birds also moves within you. One person, one idea, one thought can turn the flock of society... It is not a question as to whether we make a difference, for we all make a difference, each of us in our own way. It is the difference we make that is important."
- Excerpt from speech attributed to Stalking Wolf, Apache

Pay attention to the little things.
One day you'll realise they were the big things.

Innovation...

Voice projects are pretty much always a pleasure but some are especially rewarding, like encouraging innovation, talent and positive ideals. I recently voiced a promotional trailer on behalf of the Scottish Government and National Geographic TV, highlighting The Saltire Prize, Scotland's £10 million challenge to accelerate the commercial development of marine energy. It's exciting to think that this opportunity for innovative minds could lead to a clean, safe, renewable energy future, which will hopefully also protect and respect our natural environment too! Meanwhile, a commercial for Young Enterprise Scotland - aims to help young people in Scotland develop self esteem and find the entrepreneur within. I kicked off my career in media with the help of a youth training initiative - it was a great experience and as they say, I never looked back...

me...

Welcome to my new blog! I'm a Scottish female voice over artist - I earn a living by providing my voice for documentaries, promotions, commercials, educational podcasts, radio shows and so on. I've always been really excited by the power of the spoken word! A clever catchphrase has the power to capture the imagination. A beautiful speech has the power to change the world. So, aside from updating you on my work, this blog is also a celebration of incredible voices! Voices of Wisdom, Voices of Reason, Voices of Inspiration - hopefully in the coming weeks, you'll find them all here....
